Samsung is a major components supplier for smartphones. It has long been used as the go-to firm for several components in Apple’s iPhone, for instance, and its AMOLED displays have been adopted by other firms such as HTC. Apple still buys parts from Samsung, but it also now places orders with other competing firms, too. HTC is reportedly about to do the same.
According to a new report from DigiTimes on Tuesday, HTC is now going to use OmniVision for its CMOS image sensors, instead of Samsung. It will also ask AU Optronics to provide some of its AMOLED displays. HTC will still buy a percentage of its AMOLED screens from Samsung in an effort to make sure that production times remain the same.
Apple apparently decided to reduce its orders with Samsung for “risk control,” DigiTimes said. It’s likely HTC is trying to do the same.
